What is Loft Insulation?

For loft insulation, the material is installed within your roof space, mainly between the joists, to warm your living space by slowing the heat transfer rate from your house to the outside.

Free Loft Insulation Grant

The loft insulation grant is available for tenants, landlords, and homeowners in Wales, Scotland, and England. The applications for free loft insulation are processed through the ECO4 scheme, which is only available for cavity wall properties. Under this scheme, the funding for insulation material and installation is covered.

This grant can be either 100% fully funded, not requiring homeowners to pay at all, or household owners will be asked to make up to 25% of the total installation cost, depending on their property’s eligibility.

Eligibility Criteria for ECO Scheme

You can apply for a free loft insulation grant under the ECO scheme if you meet the following eligibility criteria:

The energy suppliers need to access your loft to complete the work and insulate at least 2/3rd of your loft space, which means that houses with more than 100mm of already installed loft insulation get excluded from this scheme.

You can also get a free loft insulation grant if your gross annual household income is £31,000 or less and if you are eligible for any one of the following benefits:

Great British Insulation Scheme

Previously, the ECO scheme was only available to low-income households with poor energy efficiency, but the Government of the UK has announced plans to extend the scheme under the new Great British Insulation Scheme in 2023 to support more than 100,000 households.

People who fall under the ‘general’ group category can only avail of any one type of insulation grant, and they may have to pay some of the cost, which will be informed before approval.

According to an estimation made by the Energy Saving Trust, it has been reported that previously uninsulated properties can save almost £590, £355, £330, and £590 for a detached house, semi-detached house, mid-terrace house, and detached bungalow, respectively, after loft insulation.

Loft insulation makes your home energy efficient by reducing carbon dioxide emissions and fuel consumption. Carbon dioxide emissions are reduced in an approximate proportion of 1000kg, 610kg, 560kg, and 1000kg by a detached house, semi-detached house, mid-terrace house, and detached bungalow, respectively.
